Geological Survey researcher reported that: “Since the year 2000 there’ve been a half-million acres burned due to powerline-ignited fires, which is five times more than we saw in the previous 20 years.” Many of the most devastating fires were ignited by power lines, but arson and negligence played a major role.Ĭalifornia’s primary strategy to prevent fire damage has been to cut off electricity. These alternative archives help ensure a more permanent record of what I have written. Archives do accompany my original postings but, given the animus towards conservative writing on Google and other internet institutions, their permanence is uncertain. Indexes to my other blogs can be located here or here.

So their personal emotional needs lead them to press on us all a delusional belief that the planet needs "saving". Many Greenies (other than Al Gore and his Hollywood pals) have that instinct too but in the absence of strong orthodox religious committments they have to convince themselves that the world NEEDS them to live in an ascetic way. Monasteries and nunneries were once full of such people - with the Byzantine stylites perhaps the most striking example. There is an "ascetic instinct" (or perhaps a "survivalist instinct") in many people that causes them to delight in going without material comforts.
